WELCOME REMARKS at the Concluding Workshop of RETA 6305
Richmonde Hotel, Pasig City, Philippines
2 April 2008

Welcome to the Concluding Workshop of the RETA 6305 Project!

This event marks the third and final meeting among the participating countries, the Asian Development Bank and the organizations and institutions involved in strengthening the epidemiological surveillance and response systems in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. It has been almost two years since the RETA 6305 Project formally opened in June of 2006. We are fully aware that so much has happened since then in the three countries, from the design of the early warning system in Indonesia, to the design and development of software application programs for the laboratory surveillance system in Malaysia and the design and implementation of the Philippines Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response System. PRIMEX and the associate partners are really proud and very pleased to be witnesses and active partners of the significant progress that has been made in the effort to protect vulnerable and at-risk groups from the threat of communicable diseases in the three countries. While so much progress has been made, I also realize that so much more remains to be done. More technical guidelines need to be prepared, more health workers need to be trained, more equipment needs to be procured and more policies need to be put in place.

This workshop therefore will be an occasion to celebrate the successes and achievements that had been made. But more importantly, it will also provide everyone with an opportunity to review the valuable lessons that had been learned, carefully weigh the options that are available and decide the best course of action to pursue in order to ensure that the gains and successes that had been achieved shall not be wasted.

I look forward to the sharing of program accomplishments and insights and to the discussions on the proposed recommendations and next steps that will be taken by our esteemed colleagues from the three participating countries.

Once again, congratulations for a job well done, and our warm welcome to the guests and participants to the RETA 6305 Concluding Workshop.
