ADB Regional Technical Assistance (RETA) 7307
We need to work as one region to save the world's coral reefs NOW.

Coral reefs are the "rainforests of the sea." They are one of the most diverse ecosystems in the planet and our survival depends on them. Coral reefs and all species that depend on them will be wiped out unless we address the threats of pollution, habitat destruction, overfishing, and climate change.

We have to protect our oceans to ensure our livelihood and food security. Healthy coral reefs are our legacy to future generations.

Regional Response

The governments of Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste – are working together in a major regional program called Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) to sustainably manage the coastal and marine resources in the Coral Triangle (CT) region. The CTI uses science to inform decision-making via the Regional Plan of Action (RPOA).

It also engages stakeholders from the six countries in the Coral Triangle region (CT6) including non-government organizations, marine research institutions, and donors to address the threats to the marine, coastal and small island ecosystems.

ADB's Response: Regional Technical Assistance on Knowledge Management

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved the Regional Cooperation on Knowledge Management, Policy, and Institutional Support to the Coral Triangle Initiative (RETA 7307) as a direct response to the needs of the CT6. The RETA aims to strengthen the ability of CT6 stakeholders to manage their marine and coastal resources.

The RETA will align its activities with the RPOA and focus on knowledge management and communication in three technical areas namely:

  • sustainable finance;
  • payment for ecosystem services; and
  • preparation of the State of the Coral Triangle Report.
