The implementation plan for the second phase of the national Coral Reef Rehabilitation and Management Project (COREMAP) in Indonesia has been updated favoring action items that are mostly achievable by the end of 2008.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by ADB with officials of Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) at the end of ADB's Loan Review Mission for the PRIMEX-managed multimillion dollar project last 27 October – 7 November 2008.
Mr. M. Nasimul Islam (Environmental Engineer/Mission Leader) and Mr. Homer Taylor (Project Officer) of ADB visited Indonesia to, among others, review and assess the accomplishment of the Project components since the mid-term review (MTR) conducted in February 2008 and visit Project sites and hold discussions with the national and regional government officials and communities on implementation issues, progress and constraints, and recommend measures to address those constraints.
In the 14-page MOU signed last 7 November 2008, new action items were introduced and some existing deliverables were modified for all components of the Project beginning with Institutional Strengthening and Project Management (Component 1) and its sub-components to Community-Based Resource Management and Development (Component 2).
The document, which now becomes the latest reference for completing the Project, was signed by Project Director Yaya Mulyana from the Directorate General of Marine, Coasts, and Small Islands, MMAF; Mr. Suharsono, Head of the Research Center for Oceanography, LIPI; Mr. Islam, ADB; and Sri Yanti Wibisana, Director of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS).
The Project is the second phase of a national coral reef rehabilitation and management program whose overall goals are healthy coral reef ecosystems and prosperous coastal communities for Indonesia. Its objectives are to: (i) enhance the national and local capacity to manage the country's coral reef resources and (ii) rehabilitate and effectively manage priority coral reef ecosystems, thereby contributing in raising income levels and improving living standards among poor coastal communities.
PRIMEX has been providing Project Management Consulting Services to MMAF since April 2005 in association with local Indonesian firm, PT Trans Intra Asia (TIA), Jakarta. (Arvin Yana/PRIMEX)
