A Pacific climate change workshop with the theme, “Moving from Strategy to Action,” was organized by ADB’s Pacific Regional Department (PARD) at the Hotel Novotel in Nadi, Fiji Islands on 12-13 October 2010.
The highly successful workshop had close to 100 participants comprising representatives from ADB’s 14 Pacific developing member countries (DMCs), the major Pacific regional organizations (PIFS, SPC, SPREP, SOPAC, FFA), multilateral and bilateral organizations (ADB, WB, AusAID, British High Commission, GTZ, EU, UNDP), as well as WWF and academic institutions in the Pacific.
The two-day workshop consisted of six plenary sessions and a panel discussion on financing the climate change response in the Pacific, with the sessions to be chaired by distinguished personalities including Pacific Island Forum Secretariat (PIFS) Secretary General Tuiloma Neroni Slade, South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) Director David Sheppard, AusAID First Secretary Ryan Medrana, GTZ Climate Change Technical Adviser Marita Manley, SPREP Program Manager Netatua Pelesikoti, ADB Senior Climate Change Advisor Robert Dobias, and ADB Pacific Climate Change Program Leader Mahfuz Ahmed.
The workshop was intended to disseminate ADB’s work and approach in support of climate change adaptation and mitigation measure in its Pacific DMCs; promote partnership and dialogue with the Pacific DMCs, development partners, and other stakeholders for a coordinated and harmonized response to climate change in the region; and discuss possible mechanisms to improve the access of Pacific DMCs to climate change financing.
The workshop was organized by the Program Coordination Unit (PCU) of ADB’s Pacific Climate Change Program (PCCP), led by PRIMEX President and CEO, Elvira C. Ablaza, in her role as international Program Coordinator. The PCCP was established under the $5.3-million ADB regional technical assistance for Strengthening the Capacity of Pacific DMCs to Respond to Climate Change (RETA 7394), which was approved in October 2009.
