A computer-assisted training on online data management was held to equip DOH regional epidemiologists with skills in organizing and submitting data gathered from the field under the newly established Philippine Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (PIDSR) System (PIDSR). Close to 60 participants from the 17 Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Units (RESUs) and the National Epidemiology Center (NEC) attended the two-day Training on PIDSR Online Data Management System (ODMS) on 27-28 May 2008 at Subic Holiday Villas in Zambales. The principal trainor was Mr. Jay Lowell Payuyo, PRIMEX IT Specialist.
Lectures, visual presentations, and hands-on computer work comprised the main methodologies of the training, which ranged from installation and configuration of MS Groove software to actual data integration. The exercises were aimed at training participants to transmit data collected from the field to the central office via the Internet using the ODMS.
The PIDSR was developed by DOH-NEC with technical support from a team of PRIMEX consultants engaged by ADB to implement the ADB regional technical assistance to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and response to communicable diseases in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines (RETA 6305). PIDSR pioneers the use of facility-based information systems for timely reporting of notifiable diseases to effectively respond to the threat of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
