Selected health trainors are undergoing an intensive training workshop on 24-28 May 2010. This workshop is part of Asian Development Bank’s grant project for the Prevention and Control of Influenza A (H1N1). The workshop is expected to prepare health trainors to teach health workers down to the barangay levels clinical management and public health measures in responding to Avian Influenza cases.
The AI Case Management and Public Health Measures workshop is being held at the Astoria Plaza in Pasig City. It is the first major activity since the H1N1 Project commenced in March 2010 and will consist of two parts: a three day training for primary health care facilities and a two-day training for barangay health emergency response teams (BHERTs). This activity is a prelude to a series of regional training to be conducted from June to August 2010 in Benguet, Pampanga, Cebu, Davao, and the National Capital Region.
The TOT covers the following topics: Epidemiology of AI and other Emerging/Re-emerging Infectious Diseases; Clinical Case Management; Diagnosis (to include lab referral guide); Prophylaxis (use of drugs); Case Management and Referral; Follow-up; Public Health Measures (non-pharmaceutical remedies); Prevention; Control and Support to BHERTs.
Participants include at least five CHD health personnel—Head of the Infectious Disease Office; Health Emergency Management Staff; Health Education and Promotion Officer; Regional Surveillance Unit Officer; and a provincial/city health representative—from each of the five Project areas.
This Project is the third of a series of ADB-supported and PRIMEX-implemented initiatives to prevent the spread of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) in the region. From November 2005 to June 2008, PRIMEX implemented a grant project to support DOH in the surveillance, prevention, and control of EIDs including SARS, avian influenza (H5N1), and dengue. From July 2006 to September 2008, PRIMEX implemented another regional technical assistance (RETA6305) for Strengthening Epidemiological Surveillance and Response (ESR) in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
