The Asian Development Bank (ADB) hosted a workshop at its headquarters in Manila for some 20 health officials and local government unit representatives from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Viet Nam who shared their respective experiences in dealing with Influenza A (H1N1). Other participants included representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) – Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO), ADB, and the PRIMEX Consultant Team.
The Subregional Workshop for the Prevention and Control of Avian Influenza in Asia and the Pacific, held on 20-21July 2010, was a major activity under ADB’s regional technical assistance (Grant 0041/RETA 6313) that is intended to help its developing member countries (DMCs) respond to avian influenza and prepare for a possible human influenza pandemic.
Aside from creating a platform for sharing experiences, the workshop presented the outcome of a rapid assessment of the local infectious disease surveillance and response systems of the three countries.
RETA 6313 has the following three objectives: (i) to build the capacity of local health offices to manage and coordinate epidemiological activities in response to H1N1 and emerging infectious disease cases and outbreaks; (ii) to strengthen the capacity of communities to support prevention and control efforts by mobilizing community-based emergency response teams in the Philippines; and (iii) to assess local surveillance and response mechanisms in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Viet Nam and publish a knowledge product from this exercise.
