Some 35 DOH communication officers from various regions were given training on tested practices and procedures on health risk communication to enhance their skills in managing public information involving possible cases of avian flu and other emerging infections before, during, and after a health crisis.
TheRisk Communication Planning Workshop for DOH health promotion personnel was held at AstoriaPlaza on 16-20 June 2008, and facilitated by World Health Organization (WHO) consultant Dr. Jody Lanard.
The training involved lectures on pandemic influenza, actual exercises on developing risk communication messages and materials, tips on communicating with the media, writing of press releases, and formulating a Framework for a Risk Communication Operational Plan, including flowchart for both national and regional levels.
The activity was part of an integrated strategy for building the country’s preparedness against avian influenza and other emerging infections. Funding was provided by ADB through the PRIMEX-implemented ADB-funded Regional Technical Assistance (RETA) to support the Surveillance, Prevention, and Control of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Other Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs) (RETA 6108).
