Coordinators from hospitals nationwide learned new techniques on managing cases of avian influenza (AI) during the Hospital Preparedness Training Workshop held on 17-19 June 2008 at the Astoria Plaza in Pasig City.
The activity was premised on the perceived need to provide technical assistance to health personnel who would be attending to AI cases should they occur in the country. It sought to reduce the possible death toll, mitigate the impact of an epidemic and prevent politically driven decision-making in regional hospitals.
The training focused on clinical management, infection control, surveillance, and response to AI and other emerging infectious diseases. A Hospital Referral Network for SARS and other EIDs was also established alongside the capability-building activity.
The training was among a large number of training activities conducted under the ADB-financed RETA 6108. Currently on the last month of its extension phase covering dengue-related training, the project primarily aims to establish an effective surveillance, monitoring, and response system for SARS, AI, and other EIDs by building capacity at the national, local government unit (LGU), and hospital levels.
