Indonesia will now have two major reference documents for combating communicable diseases in the next five years as the Ministry of Health (MOH) finalizes the preparation of a strategic plan and a roadmap for the country's early warning and response system for communicable diseases and for Epidemiological Surveillance and Response (ESR).
MOH formulated the said documents following the Strategic Issues and Options Workshop held in Bali in early February 2008, as assisted by the ADB-RETA 6305 Project Team Leader, Dr. Robert Bernstein, and Project Administration Coordinator, Dr Jose Rodriguez.
PRIMEX collaborated with representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) – South East Asia Regional Office (WHO-SEARO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, USA in providing technical support to the activity.
The draft Indonesia Early Warning and Response System (IEWARS) for Communicable Diseases: A Strategic Plan and Roadmap (2008-2012) provides a narrative description of the strategic issues and options based on the ESR, IHR-2005, and Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) assessment, as well as the proposed vision, mission, goals, and objectives of the proposed IEWARS.
The draft Indonesia ESR Roadmap (2008-2012), on the other hand, presents details of the design, pilot testing, and nationwide implementation of IEWARS projected for implementation over a five-year period starting March 2008.
