Two PRIMEX specialists are part of a team that will assist both the Indonesian and the Philippine governments as they pursue the development of sustainable livelihood projects for coastal fishing villages in areas located within the Coral Triangle (CT) region.
PRIMEX Vice-President Guillermo L. Morales will be joined by microenterprise consultant, Felixberto Monasterio, International Rural Development and Finance Specialist and Microenterprise Development Specialist, respectively, in preparing the design of a Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR)-financed project for “Developing Sustainable Livelihoods in Coastal Fishing Communities in the Coral Triangle: Indonesia and the Philippines.” Their assignment commenced in mid-May and is to be completed by mid-August 2010.
The proposed JFPR-funded project aims to develop sustainable enterprises and livelihood projects in coastal fishing communities in East Kalimantan, Indonesia and Balabac Island in Palawan, Philippines to be implemented in coordination with local government units and agencies involved in sustainable development. It supports the objectives of the CTI, which is a regional cooperation involving six countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor Leste- in the sustainable management of coastal and marine resources in the region of the “Coral Triangle,” a 5.7-million sq km expanse of ocean.
Each of the six countries is expected to develop its own plan of action in support of CTI goals, and the JFPR project assists the national plans of action (NPOAs) drawn up by Indonesia and the Philippines.
This engagement is the second PRIMEX project in the CTI, the other being the Regional Cooperation on Knowledge Management, Policy, and Institutional Support to the Coral Triangle Initiative (RETA 7307), which seeks to promote regional cooperation, policy dialogue, and coordination among the six countries in the Coral Triangle region (CT6) in support of the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI).
