PRIMEX's initiatives in helping communities prevent and deal with HIV/AIDS through various projects were showcased during the three-day International Knowledge Fair on AIDS competencies held in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 4-6 February 2009.
Newly-appointed PRIMEX Manager for Training Services Ms Josefina Pavico was among the 75 participants from six countries involved in the so-called ADB-NGO Competence Process (ACP) who shared their experiences on how communities develop their AIDS Competencies and how they, as facilitators from their respective countries, stimulate communities to develop their AIDS Competencies. The event was organized by the Constellation for AIDS Competence and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), .
Among the highlights of the Fair was a visit to Chiang Mai's Violet House, a place that looks after men who have sex with men (MSM). The activity offered a first-hand exercise of a methodology called SALT (Stimulate and Support; Appreciate, Analyze and Action; Listen, Learn and Link; and Transfer/Team).
"After the SALT visit, our group went to the University of Chiang Mai and sat beside a lake to discuss and process the stories of the Violet House," Pavico shared. "It was an eye-opener to many of us who previously had biases against MSM."
Pavico was among the group of participants who planned out succeeding events, including the re-echo of the activity's milestones to other members of the Philippine National Facilitators Team as well as the 9th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP-9) which will be held on 9-13 August 2009 at the Bali Convention Centre in Bali, Indonesia.
Countries represented at the Fair were Cambodia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Thailand. A section of its session hall was reserved for the Philippines to set up a collage of the Philippine initiatives on the ACP. Pavico said PRIMEX was recognized and credited for documenting and consolidating the Philippine report.
Pavico also discussed her experience in developing peer educators among seafarers' spouses in the Philippines as part of the PRIMEX-led ADB RETA 6143 project (Supporting Women at Risk and Vulnerable to HIV/AIDS in the Philippines).
The two other Philippine organizations represented were Plan, an international humanitarian, child-centered development organization, and Kabataang Gabay sa Positibong Pamumuhay (KGPP), an NGO involved in creating peer support and peer mentoring avenues for boy-victims of prostitution and transforming their victimization into art expression.
The Constellation for AIDS Competence, the main organizer of the event, is a team of international facilitation coaches that has been offering support for building the capacity of NGOs in six countries to develop AIDS competence in the communities they work with over a two-year period with support from ADB. Its "AIDS Competence Process" kicked off in the Philippines through a workshop last 11-14 September 2007 in Manila. (Arvin Yana/PRIMEX)
