A total of 85 local government unit (LGU) health officers and members of Barangay Health Emergency Response Teams (BHERTs) formed the fifth batch of trainees on Surveillance, Prevention, and Control of Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs) under the second phase of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) RETA 6108.

The event, held on 4-6 December 2007 at the Garden Orchid Hotel in Zamboanga City, trained municipal/city health officers (MHOs/CHOs) in the first two and a half days, simultaneously with the conduct of training for BHERTs to familiarize them with SARS, AI, and other EIDs.

The training workshop, which also incorporated lectures on dengue prevention and control, in addition to other identified EIDs, also briefed representatives from the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Animal Industry (DA-BAI) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), among others, on their roles in inter-agency collaboration to prevent EID outbreaks.
The earlier four training batches were conducted on (i) 23-27 July 2007 in Baguio City for Regions 1, 2, 3 and CAR; (ii) 27-31 August 2007 in Taytay. Rizal for Regions 4A, 4B, 5, and the National Capital Region (NCR); (iii) 24-27 September 2007 in Davao City for Regions 10, 11, 12, and CARAGA Region; and (iv) 8-11 October 2007 in Cebu City for Regions 6, 7, and 8.

After the completion of the regional training workshops for MHOs and CHOs, the following activities are scheduled for the months of February and March 2008: an AI contingency planning workshop in Manila, a DOH Regional Referral Hospital Training Workshop in Region 3, and a National Summit of Local Chief Executives (LCEs) in Manila.
