A total of 85 local government unit (LGU) health
officers and members of Barangay Health Emergency Response Teams
(BHERTs) formed the fifth batch of trainees on Surveillance, Prevention,
and Control of Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs) under the second
phase of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) RETA 6108.
The
event, held on 4-6 December 2007 at the Garden Orchid Hotel in Zamboanga
City, trained municipal/city health officers (MHOs/CHOs) in the
first two and a half days, simultaneously with the conduct of training
for BHERTs to familiarize them with SARS, AI, and other EIDs.
The training workshop, which also incorporated lectures on dengue
prevention and control, in addition to other identified EIDs, also
briefed representatives from the Department of Agriculture - Bureau
of Animal Industry (DA-BAI) and the Department of Environment and
Natural Resources (DENR), among others, on their roles in inter-agency
collaboration to prevent EID outbreaks.
The earlier four training batches were conducted on (i) 23-27 July
2007 in Baguio City for Regions 1, 2, 3 and CAR; (ii) 27-31 August
2007 in Taytay. Rizal for Regions 4A, 4B, 5, and the National Capital
Region (NCR); (iii) 24-27 September 2007 in Davao City for Regions
10, 11, 12, and CARAGA Region; and (iv) 8-11 October 2007 in Cebu
City for Regions 6, 7, and 8.
After the completion of the regional training
workshops for MHOs and CHOs, the following activities are scheduled
for the months of February and March 2008: an AI contingency planning
workshop in Manila, a DOH Regional Referral Hospital Training Workshop
in Region 3, and a National Summit of Local Chief Executives (LCEs)
in Manila.
