Some 30 health trainors from five Project areas (Benguet, Pampanga, Cebu, Davao, and the National Capital Region [NCR]) completed an intensive four-day training of trainors (TOT) training on preparedness and response to Influenza A (H1N1) at the Astoria Plaza Hotel last 24-27 May 2010.
These trained trainors will then be conducting training on clinical management and public health measures for local health personnel and barangay health emergency response teams (BHERTs) in the five Project sites from mid-June to mid-August 2010.
The TOT workshop was organized into the seven sessions: (i) An Overview of the Epidemiology of SARS, H1N1, and AI Surveillance and Response Process; (ii) Roles and Functions of Key Stakeholders in AI/H1N1 Case Management, Prevention, and Control; (iii) AI/H1N1 Case Management, Prevention, and Control for Primary Health Facility Staff; (iv) Public Health Measures for H1N1; (v) Knowing the Other Infectious/Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases and their Prevention and Control; (vi) AI/H1N1 Case Management, Prevention, and Control for BHERTs and (vii) Preparation for Local Training.
Participants of the TOT Workshop included five Department of Health (DOH) regional health personnel—Head of the Infectious Disease Office, Health Emergency Management Staff, Health Education and Promotion Officer, Regional Surveillance Unit Officer, and a provincial/city health representative—from each of the five Project areas.
This Project is the third of a series of ADB-supported and PRIMEX-implemented initiatives to prevent the spread of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) in the region. From November 2005 to June 2008, PRIMEX implemented a grant project to support DOH in the surveillance, prevention, and control of EIDs including SARS, avian influenza (H5N1), and dengue. From July 2006 to September 2008, PRIMEX implemented another regional technical assistance (RETA6305) for Strengthening Epidemiological Surveillance and Response (ESR) in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
