Almost a month before project completion, the consulting team involved in developing a medium-to-long-term aquaculture subsector strategy (ADB TA 4708-Phi) and integrated action plan for the Philippines has presented a set of recommendations identified from their analysis of problems in the country’s aquaculture to major stakeholders at a workshop in Quezon City last March 22-23.
The two-day workshop allowed representatives of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) from the regional offices as well as some 70 local stakeholders to dissect the applicability of specific strategies to the region(s) or to certain commodities (Tilapia, Shrimps, Milkfish, Seaweeds, and other Fin Fishes).
The strategies focused on increasing production, productivity and production environments; improving market access; enhancing policy and institutional environment; enhancing support services such as credit and research, development and extension (RDE); and improving inclusiveness.
Asian Development Bank (ADB) Environment Specialist/Project Officer Nasimul Islam joined BFAR Director Malcolm Sarmiento and PRIMEX’s CEO Elvira Ablaza in welcoming the participants and explaining the context of the workshop.
ADTA 4708-PHI or the Aquaculture Development Technical Assistance otherwise known as Strategy for Sustainable Aquaculture Development for Poverty Reduction aimed to assist the Philippine Government prioritize its investments in aquaculture research and related capacity building that will support an emerging national strategy for sustainable aquaculture, contributing to poverty alleviation. PRIMEX is the project's consultant provider along with Malaysia-based WorldFish Center.
