Two foreign-funded projects co-managed by PRIMEX which were due for completion this year are set to be extended by both their executing and funding agencies.

Three PRIMEX consultants for the Asian Development Bank –funded Southern Philippines Irrigation Sector Project (SPISP) have been extended for up to 12 months while consulting services for the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC)-funded Southern Mindanao Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project (SMICZMP) are set to get a one-year extension based on initial talks among the involved government agencies- the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).

For SPISP, Hydraulics Structure Engineer Dr Lino P. Aldovino got a 12-person-month extension while Agriculturist Miguel A. Tetangco and Rural Sociologist Miguel D. Lopez will each be extended for another three months.

Dr Aldovino will specifically assist in conducting training related to the Operations and Maintenance Manual of the Can-asujan Dam and will continue to prepare, review and revise engineering designs for the various subprojects.

SMICZMP’s one-year extension, which will take place January of next year, has been endorsed by NEDA and the DENR and is set to be approved by the JBIC as the funding institution. PRIMEX has currently six consultants for the project including the Training Specialist, Institution-Building Specialists, and Community Development Specialists.

SPISP is a project of the ADB and National Irrigation Administration (NIA) aimed at increasing the incomes of about 10,000 farm households in the seven provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao through increased agricultural production and crop diversification. SMICZMP on the other hand aims to enhance the strategic integration of management in the coastal and watershed ecosystems to assure the sustainable development of the sustainable development of the Mt. Matutum Protected Landscape and Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape in Region XII and the Balasiao Watershed and Malalag Bay in Region XI. (ADY)
