Dr. Sonny Magboo Dr. Florante Magboo, PRIMEX Consultant and Co-team leader of RETA 6305 attended the Meeting on Capacity Building in Field Epidemiology Training Program in Mekong Basin, held on 24-27 January 2008 in Phuket, Thailand. Dr. Magboo was invited by the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand through the recommendation of the Department of Health (DOH) National Epidemiology Center. Also in attendance were FETP representatives from Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Yunnan Province of China, Japan, Philippines, and other agencies such as CDC-Atlanta, TEPHINET, and WHO.

The meeting aimed at (i) strengthening the human capacity in field epidemiology in the Southeast Asia Subregion (including Japan, China, and Korea) and (ii) presenting the blueprint of a proposed Mekong Subregional Network for collaborative applied epidemiology of capacity development.

The participation of PRIMEX in the meeting proved to be beneficial in concretizing the agenda and the design of an FETP technical forum in March 2008. The Phuket meeting provided the important issues that need to be addressed in sustaining and expanding the role of FETPs in addressing the problem of emerging and re-emerging diseases in the three countries involved in RETA6305.

It is recommended that the forthcoming International Conference, which is designed as a culminating activity of this RETA, will serve as the platform for in-depth discussion of unresolved issues raised in Phuket and the opportunity to discuss the future agenda of FETPs not only in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, but in the region as well.
