The Fisheries Resource Management Project (FRMP) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources cited the film “The Hidden Treasures of Agutayan” as the best in the Marine and Aquatic Resources category during the recently-concluded 2nd Moonrise Film Festival held at the Gateway Mall Cineplex last August 19.

Filmmaker Johny Cabreira received P75,000 in cash  from BFAR/FRMP after besting two other entries in the category.

Agutayan Island“The Hidden Treasures of Agutayan”, shot in Agutayan Marine Sanctuary in Mindanao, showcases the positive impact of collective action in the fulfilment of a vision --that is the rehabilitation of an almost barren, sunken desert and turning it into a more vibrant marine diversity as humans learn to unite and rebuild what others destroyed.

The festival was organized by the Center for Environmental Awareness and Education (CEAE) with FRMP/BFAR as one of its sponsors.

In a bid to raise awareness on coastal resource management and marine biodiversity, FRMP also gave away posters on sharks and rays, music CDs by Joey Ayala, books on Philippine Coral Reef Fishes, and brochures on biodiversity to participants for the on-the-spot drawing contest coming from the 18 schools including the Ramon Magsaysay Cubao High School, Rizal High School, UST-Educ. High School, San Juan National High School, St. Mary’s College in Quezon City, Claret School of Quezon City and Philippine Women’s University.

FRMP is a project co-managed by PRIMEX with Japan-based Overseas Agro-Fisheries Consultants, Co., Ltd. (OAFIC). It is funded by the ADB and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (with a report from Marie Filio/FRMP)
