Under the Philippine subproject of the ADB regional technical assistance to address the outbreak of SARS, Avian Influenza, and other emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) (RETA 6108), PRIMEX has been supporting the Department of Health (DOH) – National Center for Disease Prevention and Control (NCDPC) in the organization and conduct of a series of training sessions focusing on dengue prevention and control.
The training workshops are being conducted in strategic regional areas not only for public health practitioners but also for local non-health personnel, community leaders, and private entities.
These activities complement DOH’s Nationwide Anti-Dengue Campaign, which was launched by DOH Secretary Francisco T. Duque III last January 2008, with ADB funding and PRIMEX technical support, ahead of the predicted 'peak season' of the disease in the middle of the year.
The latest of the series of training activities concluded last week in Zamboanga City, targeting to build the competence of around 200 health practitioners from Region 9 and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) island provinces both in preventing and managing dengue cases.
The week-long training, held at the Garden Orchid Hotel in Zamboanga City, was customized for four groups of participants: (i) Dengue Management Training for 40 primary health care workers in Region 9 on April 21-22; (ii) Training on Dengue Management for around 45 hospital personnel on April 22-23; and a separate Dengue Management Training for 30 primary health care workers and hospital personnel of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) island provinces on April 24-25.
An orientation session simplifying the epidemiology of the disease and the ways for communities to help control its outbreak was held for 30 community leaders and non-health personnel on April 23.
Similar training activities were held for hospital staff and health and non-health LGU personnel in Region 7 on 26-28 February 2008; for municipal and city health officers and non- health personnel from Regions 10, 11, 12, and 13 on March 10-14; for Northern and Central Luzon on March 24-28; and for the six provinces of Region 6 from April 7-11.
The training team is presently gearing up for the next training batches: May 6-7 for the ARMM mainland provinces; May 20-22 for Region 8; and June 3-6 for Regions 4A, 4B, 5 and the National Capital Region (NCR).
