PRIMEX consultant tapped for ADB’s waste management project in Cagayan de Oro

Ms. Grace Penaflor Sapuay, PRIMEX Consultant, has been recently mobilized as Solid Waste Management and Environment Specialist in the ADB-supported Pre-Feasibility Study on Wastewater, Watershed, and Solid Waste Management in Cagayan de Oro City, Northern Mindanao, Philippines. This five-month project, which commenced in early June 2012, is part of a larger program called the Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA), a regional initiative established by the Asian Development Bank and the Government of Germany in 2007. PRIMEX was subcontracted by Spanish firm, IDOM Engineering, Consulting, and Architecture, to provide the services of a national solid waste management specialist in this project.

The CDIA assists medium-sized Asian cities to bridge the gap between their development plans and the implementation of their infrastructure investments. It supports the implementation of existing city development strategies or comprehensive development plans for socially, economically and environmentally equitable, and sustainable infrastructure and urban services. The governments of Sweden, Austria, and Shanghai are also providing additional support for the Initiative.

The City Government of Cagayan de Oro submitted an application for CDIA support in the areas of solid waste management, wastewater treatment, drainage and watershed management because of the urgent need for infrastructure investment and technical assistance in those areas. ADB assistance to the city addresses the environmental concerns, especially water pollution of the Cagayan de Oro River due to the absence of a sanitary sewerage and efficient drainage system, air pollution caused by stationary and mobile sources and inefficient, and unsustainable solid waste management.
